Medical Management
The hair loss for a person can be due to various reasons. Hair loss can also be treated using medication for the underlying disease where the intervention of medical management is necessary. There is evidence that supports that certain medications available to treat pattern hair loss.
Medications such as Finasteride, Dutasteride, and Minoxidil are used to prevent further hair loss rather than the regrowth of hairs.
Finasteride (Propecia)
Finasteride (Propecia): This prescription drug is employed to treat male pattern hair loss in men. Hence, Finasteride (Propecia) drug is approved for men. It slows down the hair loss in men and sometimes even new hair growth. Finasteride comes as a tablet and can be taken once a day with or without food. Strictly follow the instructions of the doctor while taking medicine and the prescribed dosage.
Finasteride can be taken only after the VIDEO CONSULTATION with the doctor. The drug is not recommended for women and men who are 60 plus.
Side-Effects
Some of the rare side effects of finasteride include risk of prostate cancer, a decrease in sexual activity, or sexual function in men. Immediately consult with your doctor if you are experiencing any of those symptoms.
Minoxidil (Rogaine)
Minoxidil (Rogaine): Minoxidil is applicable for hair loss, and it is the non prescription medication approved for both men and women. It is the most effective medicine in helping hair growth by applying on the scalp daily. Once the foam-based medicine is applied on the scalp, gently wash your hands. Initially, your hair will be shed, but once the new hair starts, it will be shorter and thinner than the previous hair.
It is required to apply at least a minimum of six months to prevent hair loss and start witnessing the new hair.
Side-Effects
Possible side-effects associated with Minoxidil (Rogaine) include scalp irritation, hair growth in unwanted areas such as face and hands.
Other Medications
The oral medication, Dutasteride is an option for men for male pattern hair loss.
